Good Food: Why Do People Eat Junk Food?
Eating junk food regularly is linked to obesity and chronic health conditions such as high blood pressure and hypertensions, but many people still choose junk food sources over their healthy, nutritious whole food counterparts. Junk food is typically cheap, processed and prepackaged, making it easily available, but there are also several motivating factors that predispose (I LEARN THIS WORD FROM TV SHOW WHITE COLLAR) people to choosing it as a meal or snack.
Convenience
Busy schedules often lessen the amount of time people have to prepare a healthy and nutritious meal, so they opt for faster, easier options. Whole foods such as vegetables and meat take time efforts to cook properly, while fast food such as hamburgers are usually served within 2 minutes of ordering. Over time, that convenience becomes a habit and eventually a perceived necessity to keep up with a such a fast-paced society in Singapore. Singaporeans often prefer to stick with the faster option.
Easing Anxiety
Increased stressed levels and anxiety cause the body to stimulate hunger for high-calorie food and it drives people to either skip meals or eat fatty and sugary junk food. High levels of anxiety and stress can also cause people to view junk food as a form of comfort. Junk food’s positive effects on the reward centre of the brain make it a comforting go-to choice. One example is chocolate.
Lack of Sleep
Sleep deprivation motivates people to choose junk food over healthy options. When you do not have enough sleep, your brain and mentality lacks willpower for you to control yourself and be disciplined. The lack of willpower often causes people to make poor choices when it comes to food.
Addiction
People may also choose junk food simply because they are dependant on it. You often hear people say “I need sugar, or sweets.” This is a result of habitually eating on food that are high in sugar or fat, which will result in a frequent mental craving for such unhealthy things.
